Group technology (GT) is the analysis and comparisons of items to group them into families with similar characteristics. GT can be used to develop a hybrid between pure process layout and pure flow line (product) layout. This technique is very useful for companies that produce variety of parts in small batches to enable them to take advantage. Also, the PFAST (Production Flow Analysis and Simplification Toolkit) can be used for this purpose. Create flow: A variety of factory layouts and detailed layouts of individual cells can be designed using a combination of PFAST (Production Flow Analysis and Simplification Toolkit), Flow Planner and a process simulation package like SIMCAD.
Chapter 18 Lean Manufacturing Objective: In this chapter, we introduce the fundamentals of Lean Manufacturing. Concepts of waste elimination are discussed. Components for Lean including: Waste identification and elimination, set -up reduction, part famili es, cell formation, cell design, batches of one and pull systems are also discussed. Get this from a library. Production flow analysis for planning group technology. [John L Burbidge]. Production flow analysis (PFA) (Burbidge ()) is a technique for finding both GT groups and their associated "families" by analyzing the information in component process routes which show the operations needed to make each part and the machines to be used for each operation.
Production flow analysis (PFA) is a technique for planning the change to GT in existing batch and jobbing production factories.
It finds a total division into groups, using the existing machines and methods to make the existing parts, without any need to buy additional machine by: It makes it impossible to delegate efficiently and it hinders the development of automation.
All these deficiencies can be eliminated by changing to “Product Organisation”, of which “Group Technology” (GT) is the final solution.
Production Flow Analysis is a simple technique for planning this by: Production Flow Analysis (PFA) method of grouping part into families used to analyze the operation steps and machine routes for the parts produced groups parts with similar or identical routings together these groups can be used to form logical machine cells in a GT layout uses manufacturing data rather than design data to make groups, so takes care.
Burbidge's Production Flow Analysis (PFA) was one of the first methodologies developed and subsequently published in the free world. It is also probably. Production Flow Analysis (PFA) uses a matrix of part numbers and machine numbers to group families.
In the matrices below, columns represent the machines whose numbers and names are at the top. Rows represent parts whose numbers and names are on the left.
Production flow analysis—Cases from manufacturing and service industry Article (PDF Available) in International Journal of Production Economics (2) February with 5, Reads. Production Flow Analysis is a mature, well-documented and practically proven method to simplify complex material flow systems, especially to transform traditional functional and process-oriented layouts into product-oriented ones.
Despite its established track record, it is not that widely by: The next chapter, which discusses process planning, will explain how group technology is key to automating this function. Also, many manufacturing firms are automating their operations by arranging their machines into cells.
The design of a cell is based on group technology. These observations reinforce the importance of group Size: 1MB.
Group Technology The manufacturing efficiencies are generally achieved by arranging the production equipment into machine groups or cells, to facilitate work flow.
Grouping the production equipment into machine cells, where each cell specializes in the production of a part family, is called cellular manufacturing. (Solaja 73) First book formalize the concept: Mitrofanov,S.P. "The Scientific Principles of Group Technology" PRODUCTION FAMILY GT FOR DESIGN APPLICATION Group Technology is the realization that many problems are similar, and that by grouping similar problems, a single solution can be found to a set of problems thus saving time and effort.
The group should be an independent profit center in some sense. It should also retain the responsibility for its performance and authority to affect that performance. The group is a single entity and must act together to resolve problems.
There are three basic steps in group technology planning: 1. coding 2. classification 3. Size: KB. In the decade that has passed since the initial publication of Production Systems, many time-tested techniques for planning, analysis and control remain unchanged; however, most have benefited from new technology and recent by: Production Management.
